Children's events and activities
Our programs are listed on our Calendar. Take a look and try out the feature where you can sort by "Interest Groups" (like Children or Preschool).
In addition to Sunday school, children’s programs throughout the year include an Easter egg hunt, Advent festival, Christmas pageant, and Club 45 fellowship group for preteens. A week-long Vacation Bible School and a Children’s Choir Camp are available in the summer.
Music opportunities include choirs for children from age three through 5th grade and chimes for 3rd-5th graders, which both meet on Wednesday evenings during the school year. See the Music page for more information.
Our weekday Preschool program is one of the best in North Carolina, and serves one-year-olds to transitional kindergarten (TK) during the school year. For more information, call the preschool office at 704-365-4116 or see the Preschool page.
Children’s Church offers a creative, fun and interactive opportunity for TK/K2nd graders to learn about worship. Children follow the Leader to the Fireside Room after Children’s Time in the 10:50 and 11:10 worship services.
Scouts are a vital part of our congregation, and our scout programs are among the strongest in Mecklenburg County. Cub Scout Pack 118 meets on Tuesdays at 6:30pm.

Children in Worship at St. Stephen United Methodist Church
Why are children included in our worship services?
- Worship is a gathering of the family of God.
- Children are a part of the family of God.
Why do children need worship?
- Children included in worship at a young age absorb and internalize the sights, sounds, and feel of worship.
- Through attending worship, children grow to appreciate and understand the importance of worship in their lives.
Helping your child get the most out of worship
- Sit close to the front. Children will pay attention if they can see what is going on.
- Look over the bulletin with your child before the service starts. Point out any special parts of the service (communion, baptism, new members joining…).
- Let your child place the offering in the collection plate.
- Let your child sign their name in the attendance pad or sign for the whole family.
- Introduce your child to those around you during the greeting time.
- Help your child memorize the Lord's Prayer.
- Help your child bookmark the songs in the hymnal before the service starts.
- Discuss the service with your child on the way home or during lunch.
