MISSION OPPORTUNITIES
at St. Stephen UMC
|
|
|
We are privileged to serve the living God. We count it a responsibility and an honor to serve others as Jesus Christ served us. At St. Stephen, there are many opportunities for you to use your gifts to reach others.
Here is a short list of LOCAL MISSIONS that we support with our time and donations:
Beyond our local area, each year we send youth and adults on summer mission work teams with Appalachia Service Project (www.asphome.org) and YouthWorks! (www.youthworks.com).
With our budget, we support global missions through our denomination. Our money supports outreach projects, schools and colleges, social justice programs and other missions throughout the county, state, nation, and world. Over 30% of our budget supports missions.

Christmas Stocking Stuffers
Pick up your stockings in your adult Sunday school class or in the marked box in the Narthex. This is a great opportunity to bring some relief to struggling families and to bring a smile to a child’s face on Christmas morning. Pick an age/gender and stuff your stocking with appropriate gifts. We are collecting each Sunday through Dec. 4. It is not too early to start as there are only 32 shopping days until the final date. Our goal is 1000 stockings so we are counting on your participation.

CONTACTS
These church members sit on the Missions Committee and represent a specific mission. We actively participate in these missions by volunteering and by giving money.

Salvation Army Women & Children's Shelter (Center of Hope)
On the second Thursday of each month church members serve dinner to approximately 150-200 women and children at The Salvation Army Women & Children’s Shelter. This mission outreach project began in October 2002. The cost of the meal is funded through the church’s mission budget with desserts donated by church members.
At 3pm on the day of the meal, five or six people meet at the church and drive down to the shelter in two cars taking the food. These volunteers prepare and serve the meal and return to the church between 6-6:30pm.
During the year United Methodist Women circles, United Methodist Men, Girl Scout Troops, St. Stephen Preschool and individuals have provided small gifts for the women and children and/or have made cash donations to purchase items needed at the shelter.
To help with this ministry in any capacity or to donate to the shelter, contact Barbara Knowles at 704-364-2419 or call the church office.

Uptown Men’s Shelter
We take and serve a meal the second Monday of each month at the Uptown Men's Shelter. This is Charlie Kupfer's recipe -- hopefully, it will inspire some “gourmet” cooks to give it a try!
Cowboy Stew:
1 lb hamburger
1 can corn
3/4 cup instant rice
1 can kidney beans
1 can stewed tomatoes
onion (optional)
1 tsp chili powder
salt/pepper to taste
Brown meat and add chili powder, salt/pepper. Add corn, beans and tomatoes. Do not drain vegetables. Cook until rice is done and stew is very hot. There are always pans in the kitchen as we recycle them...so help yourself. A lot of folks double this recipe as the single one doesn’t fill the pan. Your brownies are always a wonderful treat but during the ride to the shelter sometimes the frosted ones end up with more frosting on the foil than on the brownies. We’d love to frost them when we get there if you would bring the frosting “on the side.” As always thanks for making this happen each month.

Our Mission
The mission of St. Stephen United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We welcome guests into our church, share with them the good news of Jesus Christ, prepare people for ministry, and send forth persons into mission in the world.
