GUIDELINES FOR ALL VOLUNTEERS

Click here for a printable version of this list (PDF).
  1. Arrive on time (or a bit ahead of your scheduled time).

  2. Do not assume that others will take your place if you do not show up and participate when scheduled. Occasionally, you may be the only volunteer for a given task.

  3. Treat Guests as you would like to be treated yourself.

  4. Be friendly and courteous. This is your opportunity to show Guests respect – no matter what their situation. Remember: There but for the grace of God ….

  5. Do not expect Guests to reveal personal information or vice-versa.

  6. Leave valuables in your home or car.

  7. DO NOT GIVE MONEY TO GUESTS. If someone asks, suggest that the Guest check with the Urban Ministry Center for assistance. (Having them check with the Urban Ministry Center is a good answer for any difficult question).

  8. Per Urban Ministry Center policy, St. Stephen does not provide a clothes closet for such items as shoes, pants, shirts and coats for Guests. These closets have proven to create major difficulties, including arguments among Guests and the selling of clothing. If requested, please refer Guests to Crisis Assistance Ministry, where clothing needs can be met with little or no difficulty.

  9. IT IS ADVISABLE NOT TO TOUCH GUESTS UNEXPECTEDLY. This is especially important when they are awakened in the morning.

  10. See each Guest as an individual. If a Guest does not want to participate in an activity, please respect his or her wishes.

  11. Listen to the Guests. They often enjoy simply having a conversation. Do not feel as if you need to "fix" a given situation.

  12. Don't be afraid to make a mistake, just say "I'm sorry."

  13. Avoid excessive questioning.

  14. Don't stand over a seated Guest – sit down.

  15. Sit down and eat or drink with the Guests during meals. DO NOT remain in the kitchen as a group – this is inhospitable and gives the wrong impression.

  16. A first aid kit is contained in the Fireside Room RITI cabinet. In addition, emergency contact numbers are posted on the outside of the RITI cabinet door.

  17. Enjoy your time, but do not let your compassion overwhelm your better judgment.

  18. WEEKLY VOLUNTEER SCHEDULES WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLINE.

  19. Any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to call:

Our Mission
The mission of St. Stephen United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We welcome guests into our church, share with them the good news of Jesus Christ, prepare people for ministry, and send forth persons into mission in the world.
