Church Treasure Sale to benefit missions
Saturday, April 30, 2011

Last May, St. Stephen UMC hosted our third Treasure Sale and to date have raised over $26,000 for missions -- the Men's Shelter, Loaves & Fishes, Shepherd’s Center, Matthews Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army Center of Hope, Friendship Trays and United Methodist Committee on Relief. Our 2011 goal is to raise at least $10,000 and extend the reach of mission work at St. Stephen UMC. This is a time of great need in our community.

What is a Treasure Sale? Church members and friends donate furniture and household items to the church. We collect them in PODS storage units in March and April (up until the day before the sale). Volunteers 'set up shop' in the gym and sell the items, similar to a (very organized) garage/yard sale. All proceeds go to the church (this is not a consignment sale).

What can you do? Start cleaning out and collecting things you no longer need or want! We will collect donations starting Saturday, March 19. Bring them to the church at the designated drop-off times (see next section). Tax receipts will be provided for donations. Pickup service for large or heavy items is available on weekends by request. We bring all of the donated items in the church for one gigantic 'yard' sale. We had a HUGE response last year: donations, volunteers and customers and it was a lot of FUN!!

This sale takes many volunteers and we have a variety of options for you to use your gifts for service:

  • Collecting donations (intake collections, price, sort)
  • Packing collections in PODS
  • Putting out road signs (approx 12)
  • Setting up the gym (moving tables into gym, moving donations from PODS to tables)
  • Setting up the sale (unpacking boxes of donations in organized areas i.e. Kids, kitchen, garden, electronics, books..)
  • Cashiers
  • Floaters
  • Chef (to cook lunch for volunteers)
  • Carry out to car service
  • Clean up crew (pack up unsold items, load into Crisis Assistance truck, return tables to their rooms, pick up grounds and gym, vacuum)
  • Taking down road signs

We will be asking for volunteers to sign up starting in February. Sale Coordinators: Susi Robinson and Carolyn Maxey.
