Christmas at the Movies: Elf
Ken Curtis   -

Pastor Ken continued our Advent worship series, “Christmas at the Movies,” making the jump from classic Christmas movies to a modern classic, “Elf.” Using the adventures of Buddy the Elf, we’ll explore how this modern comedy takes cues from the real Christmas story.

Sermon Reflections:

  • Reflecting on Buddy’s actions and the Elf Code (“treat every day like Christmas”), how can we incorporate the spirit of Christmas into our daily lives beyond the holiday season? How can we extend kindness and care for others throughout the year?
  • In what ways does the movie highlight the importance of seeing the good in everyone, as Buddy does? How can we cultivate a mindset that seeks the best in others, especially during challenging or difficult moments?
  • Consider the theme of redemption in the movie, particularly Buddy’s mission to help his father get onto the “nice list.” How does this reflect the message of Christmas in terms of redemption, forgiveness, and transformation? How might we emulate this in our relationships with others? How does our faith in Jesus underpin and inform our own willingness to seek redemption and forgiveness, and to offer forgiveness to others?
  • The concept of singing loudly to spread Christmas cheer is emphasized in the movie. How does music, especially Christmas carols, play a role in sharing the joy and message of Christmas? How can our actions and words also serve as a “song” that spreads joy and hope to those around us?
  • Reflect on the idea of being present for others during the holiday season and beyond. How can we be more attentive and compassionate toward those who might need support, love, or companionship, especially during times when they may feel lonely or overlooked?
  • Considering the sermon’s message of being instruments of God’s love and messengers of hope, how can we actively live out the spirit of Christmas by being God’s messengers in our communities? What practical actions or attitudes can we adopt to embody this message of love and hope throughout the year?
