Youth

Youth Ministry

The St. Stephen Youth Ministry, for 6th-12th graders, is a dynamic program that offers multiple opportunities for youth to socialize, serve in mission together, grow in their faith, and to worship. Ministries include youth choir and handbells, spring and fall retreats, summer mission trips, recreation programs, Confirmation for 6th graders, and Middle School and Senior High UMYF ministry groups. Our UMYF year culminates in the summer with a spiritual retreat to the beach at Garden City, SC for all youth finishing 6th-12th grade.

UMYF

St. Stephen UMYF (United Methodist Youth Fellowship), or youth group, is a dynamic youth ministry designed to help youth grow in Christ by developing Christ-centered relationships. Learning to grow in our relationship with Christ and in relationship with others is a life-long, life-challenging mission. UMYF meets Sunday nights from 5-7:30pm during the school year:

  • 5:00pm Snack Supper ($5, Youth Café)
  • 5:30pm Large Group Worship (Youth Ministry Center)
  • 6:00pm Ministry Groups (Confirmation, Middle School, High School)
  • 7:00pm Closing & Dismissal

UMYF Large Group Worship is a gateway into our youth ministry. All youth, ages 6th-12th grade, meet together for a time of celebration, praise, and worship. Large Group is designed to be a high energy, fun worship experience. Ministry Groups — Confirmation (6th graders), Middle School (7th/8th grade), and Senior High (9th-12th grade) — provide age-appropriate, hands-on, and engaging programming with opportunities for relational, hands-on ministry in a smaller group environment.

Sunday Mornings

On Sunday mornings, youth participate in small groups designed to help them engage the Bible and apply it to their lives. Groups meet on Sunday mornings from 10:10-11. See the Youth Sunday School page for more details.

Missions

Youth have opportunities throughout the year to participate in missions through the church. A few examples are Room in the Inn, Habitat for Humanity, Crop Walk, etc. Missions specifically for the youth ministry include the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) and YouthWorks. See the Youth Missions page for more details.

Boy Scouts

Boy Scout Troop 118 was chartered at St. Stephen UMC in 1971, and emphasizes learning and advancement through the Scout ranks. Boy Scout Troop 118 meets on Mondays at 7pm throughout the year. See the Troop 118 webpage (www.troop118bsa.org) for details.

Recreation

St. Stephen sponsors basketball teams for boys and girls ages 5 through 18. The season kicks off in November and goes through the first week in March.

St. Stephen sponsors Spring and Fall slow-pitch softball teams that are for girls in elementary, middle and high school.
