The Bible on Broadway: Hamilton

September 28, 2025

In this final sermon in our The Bible on Broadway series, we draw inspiration from the hit, modern musical Hamilton, exploring timeless truths like contentment, legacy, and what truly matters in life. We examine Alexander Hamilton's relentless pursuit of legacy and how it contracts with what the Bible tells us about contentment. Using examples from the musical, we're reminded that our drive and ambition should be directed toward righteousness, godliness, faith, and love — not wealth or fame. We follow the character Jean Valjean who, after serving 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of brad, is given a second chance by a compassionate bishop. We examine Valjean's internal struggles as he grapples with his past as a convict and his new, hopeful future. Together, we learn the our true identity is not defined by our past sins or mistakes but is shaped by the love and grace we receive and the choices we make to life a transformed life.

Sermon Reflections

  • How does Hamilton's struggle with never being satisfied mirror challenges in your own life? Where do you find yourself constantly striving for "more" rather than being content with what God has provided?
  • The sermon contrasts Hamilton's philosophy of taking bold action with Burr's approach of waiting and preserving options. How do you balance ambition and contentment in your own spiritual journey? Can you pursue godliness vigorously while still being content?
  • Eliza forgave Hamilton despite his public betrayal and humiliation. When have you struggled to show grace and forgiveness to someone who didn't deserve it? How does forgiveness glorify Christ?
  • The message emphasizes that "we brought nothing into the world so that we can take nothing out of it." How would your daily priorities and decisions change if you truly internalized this truth?
  • While Hamilton sought the spotlight, Eliza worked faithfully in the background, establishing an orphanage and living out Christ's love. How does God value "background" faithfulness versus public recognition? Where is God calling you to serve, even if no one notices?
  • The sermon asks, "Will they tell your story?" but redirects us to focus on telling God's story. How can you shift from making your life about your own legacy to making it about advancing God's redemptive story?
