The Bible on Broadway: Phantom of the Opera

September 14, 2025

In this second sermon from our series The Bible on Broadway, we explore the hit musical Phantom of the Opera and its profound spiritual lessons. We explore themes of temptation, hidden struggles, and unconditional love, while comparing the various masks worn by characters to our own hidden pains and pretenses. Together, we wander out from the darkness and into the light of God's unwavering love.

As a reminder: Individual sermon videos will not be published to Youtube and audio will not be published to Spotify or Apple Podcasts during this current worship series. You may watch the livestream of our traditional service on Youtube (on this page) or, if encountering issues like muted audio (from copyright restrictions), view the full service on our Boxcast channel

Sermon Reflections:

  • What is your "music of the night" or the temptation that sings in your ears, calling you to surrender to your darker side?
  • The Phantom and others in the musical wear masks, symbolizing how we hide our pain, guilt, or shame, or even our true feelings about faith. What masks do you find yourself wearing, and why?
  • Nicodemus sought Jesus out at night to avoid revealing his true desires. Are there aspects of your faith or spiritual journey that you keep hidden or explore "by night"? Why?
  • Jesus invites us to step out of darkness and into the light, to "be born again" and truly follow Him, not just believe. What does it mean for you to fully step into the light and boldly follow Jesus, removing any masks you might be wearing?
  • Christine's unconditional love for the Phantom began to change his heart, teaching him that love cannot be forced but is only given. How has unconditional love, either given or received, impacted your understanding of true love, and how might this relate to God's love for you?
  • God reassures us of His love and invites us to love Him back, without forcing us. How does the understanding that God will always love you, regardless of your "music of the night" or your masks, influence your willingness to trust in His love and boldly follow Him?
