The Bible on Broadway: Wicked
In this powerful sermon from our new series The Bible on Broadway, we explore the hit musical Wicked and its profound spiritual lessons. Discover how the story of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) and Glinda reflects our own struggles with fear, prejudice, and transformation. We examine how Jesus consistently chose to befriend the marginalized and outcast — just like Elphaba — while challenging us to move beyond our fears of "the other." Through the lens of Proverbs 29:25 and 1 John 4:18, we learn how perfect love casts out fear and how genuine relationships can change us "for good."

Sermon Reflections:
- Pastor Ken suggests we can see ourselves in both Glinda and Elphaba. In what ways have you been like Glinda (judgmental, superficial, trying to "fix" others), and in what ways have you felt like Elphaba (marginalized, misunderstood, rejected)?
- Leaders throughout history have given people "a real good enemy" to fear. How do you recognize when fear is being used to manipulate you, and how can you respond with love instead of fear when faced with such messaging?
- Jesus consistently ministered to those who were outcast and marginalized. Who are the "Elphabas" in your community today — those who are feared, misunderstood, or pushed to the margins? How might Jesus be calling you to reach out to them?
- Pastor Ken tells us that "change happens when we begin to know people." Can you think of a time when getting to know someone who was different from you changed your perspective? How did that relationship transform you?
- On mission trips and service projects, "we are the ones who are being sanctified." How have you experienced personal transformation through serving others? What does this teach you about the true purpose of Christian service?
- Reflecting on the song lyrics about being "changed for good" through friendship, who are the people in your life who have changed you for the better? How have you been an agent of positive change in others' lives, and how does Jesus continue to change you "for good"?
